Desde el dibujo, la pintura, performance, video e instalaciones, su trabajo se enfoca en la identidad y sus formas de representación, las relaciones cotidianas con la cultura mainstream, el teatro y el juego de máscaras, revelando la influencia que ejerce este artefacto histórico sobre el valor del rostro en la historia visual. Actualmente vive y trabaja en Santiago de Chile, y está representada por OMA Galería. Paula Martínez is a Chilean Visual Artist. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Co-founder of the artists’ collective La Casa de las Recogidas. She received training in Art and Visual Culture through Estudios Independientes V, a contemporary art program focused on critical research and creative practice. Working across drawing, painting, performance, video to installation, her practice explores identity and its modes of representation, everyday relationships with mainstream culture, theatre and masks, revealing the influence this historical artifact has on the value of face in visual history. Quiénes somos, qué somos, cómo nos identificamos con algo. Apunto principalmente al gigante mundo mediático que nos ofrece infinitas identidades a observar, imitar, adquirir. La idea de repetir lo que sucede ahí me llevó a trabajar con múltiples medios: desde la pintura, el dibujo, la performance, las instalaciones hasta el video, me gusta hacer experimentos sociales que involucran a los espectadores en la obra, invitándolos a jugar y ser parte de una fantasía donde se logran fusionar diferentes universos: lo corpóreo y lo medial. I am interested in the idea of identity. Who we are, what we are, how we identify with something. I point to the huge media world that offers us infinite identities to observe, imitate, acquire. De que en su figura conviven imágenes tan distintas como la de tapices flamencos y animés japoneses. Y también las nuestras, autorizadas a fingir que Cleopatra, Julio César y Marco Antonio tenían nuestras caras sonrientes. O que el vestido de Elizabeth Taylor estaba hecho a nuestra medida. O quizás la conclusión de que Cleopatra no está muerta y que -gracias a las manos de Paula- aún podemos apreciar el olor de sus baños de leche, el brillo de sus joyas, la crudeza de sus serpientes y las múltiples caras con que nos mira desde el pasado. &nbsp;Pero también la pintura es capaz de revivir el pasado, como demuestra Ignacio San Martín a lo largo de su Tira de contacto, en donde 36 fotografías familiares antiguas (emulando un rollo fotográfico de 35 mm) regresan fantasmagóricas a levitar en Galería OMA bajo la forma de pinturas. Su oficio carga a la imagen de nuevas capas de sentido, con una pincelada rápida, sin dibujos anteriores, a medio camino entre la abstracción y la figuración. Si las fotos antiguas suelen ser por excelencia imágenes en blanco y negro, Ignacio les suma color y hace aparecer pulsiones del inconsciente que resguardan afectos, dolores y añoranzas. &nbsp; Mismo oficio que guía la mano de Eliecer Espinoza en Doble distancia, a través de cuerpos en desequilibrio, arquitecturas desoladas y atmósteras escombrosas, sus juegos gravitacionales entre figuras terminadas e inacabadas cobran forma gracias a brochazos disímiles que crean escenas ambiguas. Al mirar sus pinturas, es inevitable la inmersión, habitar un tránsito entre el aparecer y el desaparecer que nos arroja la idea de que quizás también nosotros somos árboles alzados sobre la oscuridad. Tras todo esto, aparece la idea de que las distancias entre las obras tal vez solo hicieron de esta exposición algo más completo. Que el power trío aquí montado entona canciones que no podrían sonar en ningún otro escenario. Que las diferencias entre materialidades, soportes y estilos tan sólo derriban barreras, para dejar en su lugar una amalgama extraña de experiencias artísticas, ansiosa de que entremos en ella, en búsqueda del papel que cumplimos también nosotros dentro de todo esto. Gabriel Godoi Teórico del arte Paula Martínez’s reminder in Cleopatra Visits Kleopátra: that few things are as powerful as a pop icon. That within her figure coexist images as different as Flemish tapestries and Japanese anime. And ours too—our own projections—are allowed to pretend that Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, and Mark Antony bore our smiling faces. Or that Elizabeth Taylor’s costume was tailored to fit our bodies. Or perhaps even the conclusion that Cleopatra isn’t dead, and —thanks to Paula’s hands—we can still sense the scent of her milk baths, the gleam of her jewels, the rawness of her snakes, and the many faces through which she watches us from the past. But painting also has the power to bring the past back to life, as Ignacio San Martín demonstrates in Tira de contacto, where 36 old family photographs (mimicking a 35 mm film roll) return ghostlike to float inside OMA Gallery in the form of paintings. His craft endows the images with new layers of meaning, using fast brushstrokes, without preliminary sketches, straddling abstraction and figuration. If old photographs are by nature black and white, Ignacio reintroduces color, making unconscious impulses emerge—those that preserve affection, pain, and longing. That same craft guides the hand of Eliecer Espinoza in Doble distancia. Through off-balance bodies, desolate architectures, and rubble-filled atmospheres, his gravitational play between finished and unfinished forms comes to life in disparate brushstrokes that conjure ambiguous scenes. Looking at his paintings, immersion is inevitable. We inhabit a space of transition—between appearing and disappearing—that throws us the idea that perhaps we too are trees rising above the darkness. And through all of this emerges the sense that the distance between the works only made this exhibition more complete. That the power trio assembled here sings songs that couldn’t be performed on any other stage. That the differences in materiality, medium, and style only serve to break down boundaries, leaving in their place a strange amalgam of artistic experiences, eager for us to step into them in search of the role we, too, play in all of this.
