“Al aire, libre is a public art project curated by Tiago de Abreu Pinto (Brazil) that took place mostly during May 16-17, 2020 in Chile, in the middle of the quarantine caused by the covid19 pandemic -and later expanded to Mexico and Brazil-. It consisted of an ephemeral exhibition of physical works that were connected under the spirit of the project, although distant from each other. A diluted exhibition, which united the Chilean territory.”

2020. Vertical Memo, installation, sanguine drawing on donated sheets, approx. 17 x 1.10 m

“I think of memory as the only permanent public space in the body, and I am immediately transported two months ago, to the recent and magnificent 8M that we were able to share in the open air. Our last physical/corporeal/collective encounter/remembrance in the street before going into preventive quarantine. A simple game of letters. A vertical memo containing -in disorder- the word HISTÓRICAS1. From the top floor of the building, I hung 10 joined sheets of paper -donated by different people for the realisation of this work- in which each module contained a letter made by drawing arms in sanguine".

Letter from my neighbour Marcela days after the activation

"Dear... (I don't know your name):

I didn't know you, but I found out through your friend that you were the creator of the hanging sign that appeared in our lives last Friday. He was worried about fixing it to the floor so it would not move, and he told me in a few words that it was an artistic and playful initiative to interact with those of us who live in this building.

For the first time (and I have been here for more than 2 years) I felt a glimpse of community and I was happy, I believed that we could start a process like you see in so many buildings, where everyone shares their art, where everyone applauds together or cacerole and, forced to be confined, we could make this space something more human.

I heard you had to take it down. I'm so sorry, not only because we were so excited at home to play and find out, but because I can imagine your frustration.

Thank you very, very much for trying, and don't let the ignorance of some overshadow you. Remember that the great creators were never immediately understood.

May all your projects be increasingly successful.

With love,
Marcela #725"
