Cleopatra ha sido tantas veces representada a
lo largo de la historia que ya se considera un auténtico ícono de
la cultura pop. La podemos ver en antiguos relieves, en
monedas, bustos, esculturas, camafeos, cerámicas, grabados, dibujos, pinturas,
textiles, en la literatura -destacando el clásico “Antony and Cleopatra” de
William Shakespeare escrito en 1606- y sus múltiples representaciones
posteriores en el teatro, del que derivó su boom en el cine influenciando otros espacios en los medios de comunicación, la moda,
la publicidad y finalmente todo su archivo recolectado en el mundo digital y
sus infinitas versiones futuras que posibilita el internet y las nuevas
tecnologías. Un rostro público sin rostro. Una máscara por
excelencia.
Esta serie está basada en diferentes representaciones que se han hecho de la famosa faraona egipcia:
(1) Busto de Cleopatra VII de arenisca datado en
la época ptolemaica (ca. 50-30 a.C)
(2) Escultura en bronce de Cleopatra realizada a principios del siglo XVI por el artista italiano Severo Calzetta de Ravenna. The MET Collection
(3) La actriz Constance Collier en la obra de teatro “Antony and Cleopatra” de William Shakespeare representada en “His Majesty’s Theatre” de Londres el año 1906
(4) Antiguo relieve egipcio de Cleopatra VII en el templo de Dendera (época ptolemaica)
(5) La actriz Claudette Colbert en la película “Cleopatra” de 1934 dirigida por Cecil B. DeMille
Cleopatra has been depicted so often throughout history that she has become a true pop culture icon. We can see her in ancient reliefs, on coins, busts, sculptures, cameos, ceramics, engravings, drawings, paintings, textiles, in literature - the classic "Antony and Cleopatra" by William Shakespeare, written in 1606, stands out - and in her many later representations in the theatre, from which her boom in the cinema has derived, influencing other spaces in the media, fashion, advertising and, finally, all her archive collected in the digital world and its infinite future versions, made possible by the Internet and new technologies. A faceless public face. A mask of excellence.
